Ditmas Park contains some of Brooklyn's most unique architecture. A landmark district, Ditmas Park is known for its Victorian-style homes — many complete with generous back yards, sitting on wide, tree-lined streets. Just around the corner from 554 east 18th street, lies the oldest purpose-built outdoor shopping plaza in America, Newkirk Plaza is home to some of the area’s longest-standing businesses, including Leon’s Barber Shop, which has been in operation for roughly 100 years.
In Tenafly’s wooded east hill Meital and I found a true gem. When we entered this one floor ranch built in the 1950’s we looked at each other and silently said to each other, YEP, this is it!, With its albeit dated, yet warm and expansive living room with paneled vaulted ceiling, its mid 80’s Frank Lloyd Wright style addition, with yes a sunken couch in the living room, we knew this home would soon provide a not so blank canvas for the inspiration for our next renovation project.
Some homes speak the moment you walk in. 81 Highwood was one of them—a red-brick former church residence with craftsmanship you can feel in your hands. Thick nine-inch brick, original stables, an iron milk box built into the masonry for early-morning deliveries, horsehair insulation around old pipes, and newspapers from the 1800s whispered stories of the past.
